From the late 1960s to the early 1970s, Senator Cruz terrorized the streets of northern California, and was notoriously known as the "Zodiac Killer". Trump, however, balked at the concept that there was "anything special" about Cruz's works.
"I have to say, it baffles me honestly when you have people out here saying it's impressive what Ted Cruz did in the sixties," said Mr. Trump, "It wasn't all that impressive. You look at the history of serial killers you have guys like Jack the Ripper, Jeffrey Dahmer, the I-70 killer, all much more accomplished than this mediocre Zodiac Killer. The Zodiac Killer was a knock-off brand serial killer at best. A real lightweight."
"To say the Zodiac Killer was an A-list serial killer is equivalent to saying that John McCain was a war hero," he added.
Trump even went so far (<----trigger warning) as to suggest that Mr. Cruz was, in fact, not the notorious Zodiac Killer.
"I've said this all along, Ted Cruz is one of the worst liars I've ever seen. Lyin' Ted I call him. Who's to say he isn't lying about this? After all, these murders took place in northern California, not Canada. It simply doesn't add up, and even it did, quite frankly, he didn't do a very good job. I would've done better."
The incident has prompted clips to surface of Mr. Trump in 2006 speaking about the Zodiac Killer, but expressing what appears to be a different opinion entirely:
"The Zodiac Killer gives me the willies!!! I would say he is probably the most infamous killer ever! And if I had to guess as to his secret identity, I would guess Ted Cruz," says 2006 Donald Trump.
It appears there is no issue on which the real estate mogul is afraid to change his stance. Receipts also show that Mr. Trump frequently donated to numerous organizations dedicated to catching the Zodiac Killer, When accused of flip flopping for votes, Trump denied it.
"If you watch the clip, I very clearly say I would guess Ted Cruz. At the time I was unaware of his Canadian background. If I had known that he was likely in a Tim Horton's drinking maple syrup when this happened, I wouldn't have said that."
However, it's worth pointing out that these comments come in the midst of a new poll which shows Ted Cruz to have gained an edge on Trump in the demographic of serial killers in the United States.
Our friends SixTwentyNine have been polling this demographic for some time now. As late as December, 98% of serial killers who identified as Republicans said that they would vote for Mr. Trump. But when news broke that Ted Cruz was literally the Zodiac Killer, the tide shifted. Trump's lead began shrinking rapidly until finally he fell into a distant second. As of last week, 74% of Republican serial killers now want Mr. Cruz to be president, along with 8% of Democrat serial killers.
Trump again denied that this was a tactic for votes.
"Look frankly I don't need to resort to this kind of thing because everyone knows there is no candidate who will be as good for serial killers as I will. You look at on the other side- I spoke to Hillary the other day, and she said she'd do a lot to help rapists not get caught, so I say 'Okay, what about serial killers? ' Because we all know she's not going to do anything to help them not get caught. She had her chance, you at look her administration - during her administration serial killers got locked up. She will not be nearly as good to them as I will. They're going to figure that out and they're going to figure that Lyin' Ted is no good for them either."
Asked if he would prosecute serial killers under a Trump administration, Chris Christie blatantly scratched his hair, blinked three times, made a couple different hand gestures, and then said, "Of course not. And once again, I am NOT a hostage of this campaign."
